6EWS is a standalone, wireless electronic trim that runs on battery power and Bluetooth credentials, so it needs no hardwiring back to a central access control panel, it simply replaces the exit device's outside trim. The 6W99, by contrast, is a wired electrified trim requiring continuous power from a panel for basic fail-safe/fail-secure control; 6EWS instead manages access through its own onboard credential logic.

6EWS accepts RFID cards, smartphone (Bluetooth) credentials, PIN codes, and a mechanical key override, with compatibility for MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2/EV3/Light, MIFARE Ultralight, MIFARE Classic, and optional Prox. This lets a facility manage exit device access the same way it manages its other PDQ electronic locksets.

6EWS runs on four AA alkaline batteries for approximately two years, or it can be wired to an optional 5V DC power source instead. Battery status and low-battery alerts notify facility staff before it needs service.

6EWS is designed specifically for PDQ's 6300 Rim and Surface Vertical Rod exit devices in wide-stile configurations, fitting 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" door thickness. It's available in four finishes and five lever designs to match the rest of a building's PDQ hardware.

6EWS carries a UL/cUL 10C 3-hour fire rating along with FCC Part 15 and ADA compliance, higher than the 20-minute rating on PDQ's CLS interconnected lock, reflecting its use on heavier fire-rated exit device openings. It communicates over BLE 4.2/5.2 with AES 256 encryption.

Yes, 6EWS logs and tracks access events and status, and supports scheduled access windows plus auto lock/unlock, giving facilities an audit trail on doors equipped with exit devices. This applies to the outside trim only, free egress from inside via the panic bar is never restricted.
