      FAQs

What is a narrow key switch used for on a commercial door?

A narrow key switch lets authorized staff manually trigger an electric strike, magnetic lock, or exit device using a physical key rather than a card or code. It's built into a stainless steel faceplate sized for narrow-stile aluminum storefront doors, giving building owners a low-cost, non-networked way to release or override an electrified lock from outside.

What's the difference between PDQ's narrow key switch and the wide key switch?

The narrow key switch is sized to mount on narrow-stile aluminum door framing, while PDQ's wide key switch is built for wider door stiles and adds status indicator lights showing lock state. If your door frame is narrow-stile and you don't need a visual lock-status indicator, the narrow version is the correct fit.

Is the key switch available in momentary or maintained contact?

Yes, PDQ's narrow key switch is offered in both configurations: momentary (81310-4MT), where the contact closes only while the key is turned and springs back, and maintained (81310-4MM), where turning the key holds the contact in position until turned back. Choose momentary for a timed release pulse and maintained for a toggled on/off state.

Can the narrow key switch be added to a building's master key system?

Yes, the cylinder can be keyed into a facility's existing master key system. This lets one key control the key switch alongside other PDQ mechanical and electrified locks on the property, simplifying key management for maintenance and security staff.

What is the narrow key switch made of?

It has a stainless steel faceplate for corrosion resistance and durability in high-traffic commercial entrances. Because it mounts in a narrow-stile frame, it's typically specified for aluminum storefront and glass door entries rather than wide hollow-metal doors.
