FAQs
When is a light-duty door closer like the PDQ 3100 appropriate, versus a standard-duty model?
The 3100 is designed for moderate-traffic interior doors in offices and retail spaces where door use is regular but not constant or high-force. If the opening is a high-traffic commercial entrance, exterior door, or sees heavier daily cycling, step up to PDQ's standard-duty 5300/5500 or heavy-duty 5100 lines, which offer wider spring ranges and full hydraulic backcheck feature sets aimed at higher-abuse use.
What's the difference between the PDQ 3100 and 3101 closer models?
The 3101 has a fixed adjustable spring size around BF/size 4, while the 3100 offers a broader adjustable range from size 3 through 6. Both are Grade 1 certified and share the same aluminum alloy body, so the choice comes down to how much spring-tension flexibility the specific door installation needs.
What arm types are available for the PDQ 3100 light-duty closer?
PDQ offers the 3100 with parallel arm (PA), pivot stop arm (PS), hold-open (HO), heavy-duty parallel arm stop (DS/DSHO), and heavy-duty cushion stop (SCS/SCSHO) configurations. This gives light-duty interior applications the same hold-open and stop-arm flexibility as PDQ's higher-duty closers, just paired with a lighter-rated body.
Is the PDQ 3100 closer UL fire rated?
Yes, the 3100 is UL-listed for 3-hour fire doors and is ADA compliant, so it can be used on rated interior doors in offices and retail spaces despite its light-duty classification. It also carries TAA compliance and a 25-year limited warranty.
What finish options does the PDQ 3100 come in?
The 3100 is offered in four finishes (689 aluminum, 693 black, 695 duro bronze, and 696 gold), fewer than PDQ's heavier-duty closers, which offer six including polished brass and chrome. This reflects its positioning for interior, lower-visibility applications rather than high-end storefront entrances.
