FAQs
What is a door closer and what does it do?
A door closer is a hydraulic mechanical device mounted to a door and frame that automatically returns the door to a closed and latched position after it's opened, controlling both closing speed and force. The PDQ 5100 does this with a hydraulic-controlled closing cycle plus a separate backcheck that cushions the door before it hits full swing, protecting walls, doors, and frames from damage.
What does ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 mean for a door closer?
ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 is the highest commercial performance tier for door closers, requiring the closer to pass cycle testing, force, and durability standards well beyond residential or light-commercial hardware. The PDQ 5100 is certified to this standard, meaning it's built for continuous use on commercial entrances rather than occasional-use interior doors.
Is the PDQ 5100 heavy-duty closer enough, or do I need extra-heavy-duty like the 7100?
The 5100 is the right choice for most commercial exterior and interior doors (offices, retail, schools, and general institutional traffic), thanks to its high-strength aluminum alloy body and adjustable size 1-6 spring range. Step up to PDQ's 7100 only for the largest, heaviest doors or the highest-abuse, highest-cycle entrances, since the 7100 uses a cast iron body instead of aluminum.
What arm and hold-open configurations does the PDQ 5100 offer?
The 5100 is available with parallel arm, hold-open, heavy-duty parallel arm stop, heavy-duty cushion stop, track arm, extra duty parallel arm, and pivot stop arm options, several with dedicated hold-open (HO) variants. This range lets one closer body handle standard swing doors, stop-arm applications, and hold-open requirements without switching product lines.
Is the PDQ 5100 door closer rated for fire doors?
Yes, the 5100 is UL listed for labeled swinging fire doors rated up to and including 3 hours. It's also designed for high-traffic commercial applications and backed by a 25-year limited warranty, making it suitable for both rated egress doors and everyday exterior/interior commercial openings.
What finish options are available for the PDQ 5100?
The 5100 comes in six finishes: 605 bright brass, 626 satin chromium, 689 aluminum, 693 black, 695 dark duranodic bronze, and 696 satin brass/gold. It ships standard with a full plastic cover, with an optional full metal cover available for added durability.
