Why does an exit device need a different electric strike than a mortise or cylindrical lock?
Rim exit devices project a vertical latch bolt through a surface-mounted strike rather than into a frame pocket, so the 9910 is built as a completely surface-mounted unit rather than a mortised-in strike body. It's designed specifically for PDQ 6300 and 6400 rim exit devices in both wide and narrow stile applications.
Is the 9910 fail-safe or fail-secure?
The 9910 is fail-secure only, it is not field-changeable to fail-safe like PDQ's mortise and cylindrical strikes. Since exit devices already provide free egress from inside via the push bar regardless of strike state, fail-secure operation on the outside keeper is standard for rim exit device applications.
What voltage does the 9910 run on?
It's field-selectable for 12/24VDC or 12-24VAC, drawing up to 500mA at 12VDC. That higher draw versus PDQ's mortise/cylindrical strikes reflects the larger keeper mechanism needed to hold a rim device's heavier latch bolt.
How much force can the 9910 withstand?
The 9910 is rated for 1,500 lbf static strength and 70 ft-lb dynamic force, with a 250,000-cycle life rating, specs suited to exterior doors with panic hardware that see forced-entry attempts or heavy daily traffic.
Is the 9910 rated for fire doors?
Yes, the 9910 carries a 3-hour fire rating, matching the fire-door duty typical of rim exit device openings like stairwell and egress doors in commercial buildings.
