      FAQs

What is exit device trim, and why does a door with a panic exit device need it?

Exit device trim is the outside-of-door hardware that lets authorized users enter through a door equipped with a panic exit device, since the device itself only allows free egress from inside. It mounts on the exterior face and can be a lever, knob, pull, or cylinder depending on the access control needed. The 6W adds a lever escutcheon for wide-stile doors using PDQ's 6300 series exit devices.

Is the 6W trim compatible with narrow stile aluminum doors?

No, the 6W is built for wide stile doors only and is not designed to fit narrow stile aluminum storefront doors. For narrow stile applications with a 6300/6400 series exit device, PDQ's 6N narrow escutcheon trim is the correct choice, since it's engineered around the tighter door face dimensions of narrow stile framing.

Does the 6W exit device trim meet ADA requirements?

Yes, the 6W is ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1 compliant because it uses a lever handle rather than a knob, so it can be operated with a closed fist and doesn't require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting. This makes it suitable for entrances along an accessible route.

Can I use 6W trim to retrofit an existing door without cutting new holes?

Yes, the 6W escutcheon is sized to cover existing door prep and mounting holes, which lets it retrofit onto doors that previously used a different trim or lock without new drilling. This makes it a common upgrade path when replacing older wide-stile exit device trim.

What lever styles and finishes are available on the 6W?

The 6W comes in six lever styles (Philadelphia, Boston, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, and Los Angeles), and seven finishes including satin chromium (626), satin stainless steel (630), bright brass (605), and flat black (622). Five function options are available to match different locking/dogging requirements.

What exit devices does the 6W trim pair with?

The 6W is engineered specifically to integrate with PDQ's 6300 series exit devices, including rim, surface vertical rod, concealed vertical rod, and mortise configurations. It's typically specified for wide-stile commercial entrances such as main building entries, mall doors, and hollow metal storefronts.
