What is panic hardware and when does a door legally need it?
Panic hardware (an "exit device" or "crash bar") lets someone exit by pushing a horizontal bar, with no need to twist a knob or find a key. Model codes (IBC, NFPA 101) require it on doors serving assembly, educational, or high-occupancy rooms with 50+ occupants. The PDQ 6300R is UL 305 listed for panic use and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, meeting both the life-safety code trigger and the highest BHMA durability grade.
What's the difference between the PDQ 6300R and 6400R exit devices?
The 6300R is built for wide-stile doors, requiring a minimum 3-1/2" stile width, while the 6400R is the narrow-stile version down to 3-1/8". Both are rim-mounted, single-door devices with the same UL 305 and UL 10C fire ratings; the choice comes down to how much vertical frame material the door stile actually has, not the door's function.
Can the 6300R be installed on a fire-rated door?
Yes. It's ETL listed under UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 for 3-hour fire door labels, covering single doors up to 4' x 10' and door pairs (with a mullion) up to 8' x 8'. This is in addition to its separate UL 305 panic listing, so the same chassis serves both fire-rated and non-rated openings.
What door widths does the 6300R fit?
It ships in standard 24", 36", and 48" widths for wide-stile doors with at least a 3-1/2" stile. The device is non-handed with field-reversible trim, so one part number works on either a left- or right-hand door without a special order.
What finish options are available for the 6300R?
Six standard finishes: 605 (polished brass), 606 (satin brass), 613E (dark oxidized bronze), 622 (flat black), 626 (satin chrome), and 630 (satin stainless steel), with an optional antimicrobial coating on 626 and 630. That antimicrobial option matters for healthcare and school specifications where touch-surface hygiene is a spec requirement.
Can the 6300R be wired for access control?
Yes, as an add-on to the mechanical chassis, options include motorized latch retraction, request-to-exit/signal switch, alarmed exit, latch bolt monitoring, and delayed egress.
