FAQs
When do I actually need a 4 ball bearing hinge instead of a 2 ball bearing hinge?
Step up to PDQ's HB 4 ball bearing hinge for heavier or wider doors, doors equipped with a door closer, and high-frequency commercial openings where the extra bearing set carries more load and cuts wear versus a standard 2 ball bearing hinge. It's built to ANSI/BHMA A156.1 Grade 1 in 0.180" gauge steel or stainless steel, PDQ's heaviest-duty leaf thickness across its hinge line.
What ANSI grade is the PDQ HB hinge rated?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.1 (listed as A5111 in steel, A811 in stainless), the top commercial duty classification. That rating reflects the heaviest load capacity and highest cycle testing in PDQ's hinge lineup, making it the choice for entrances that see constant, heavy-door traffic.
Is the HB hinge approved for use on fire-rated door assemblies?
Yes, it complies with NFPA 80-2010, Section 6.4.3.1, the standard governing hardware on fire door assemblies. It also uses a non-removable pin secured by a 3/32" hex set screw, so it satisfies both fire-code and security requirements on rated commercial openings.
What material and finish options are available for the HB hinge?
It's available in steel for interior, non-corrosive locations or stainless steel for exterior and corrosive environments, in six finishes: 600 (P0), 605 (US3), 613E, 619 (US15), 630 (32D), and 652 (US26D). Both leaves are 0.180" thick, PDQ's thickest gauge, built for sustained heavy-door loads.
What's included with the HB hinge and how long is it warrantied?
Each HB hinge ships with mounting hardware (12-24 x 1/2" FHMS machine screws and 12 x 1-1/4" FHWS wood screws) and carries a five-year limited warranty. The 1/16" closed-position clearance and non-removable pin design are standard across the finish and material options.
