How many electrified devices can I power through an EL4 hinge?
The EL4 carries 4 concealed wires (two 20-gauge, two 26-gauge) through the hinge knuckle, which is enough to power one electrified function, typically a single electric strike, electrified lock, or lock monitoring switch running between the frame and door.
What's the difference between the EL4 and the EL8 electrified hinge?
The EL4 has 4 internal wires for a single electrified device, while the EL8 has 8 wires to run multiple devices (such as a lock plus a request-to-exit switch plus a door position switch), through one hinge. Choose the EL4 when the opening only needs to power one electrified function.
Can the EL4 be used on a fire-rated door assembly?
Yes, the EL4 is UL Listed and complies with NFPA 80-2010 Section 6.4.3.1 for fire door hardware, in addition to meeting ANSI/BHMA A156.1-2013. It's suited to power a single electrified lock or strike function on a rated opening without a separate power transfer device.
How durable is the EL4 for a high-traffic commercial door?
