FAQs
What is a ball bearing hinge?
A ball bearing hinge places hardened steel ball bearings between the knuckle joints so the leaves rotate with less friction than a plain bearing design, which matters most on doors fighted by a closer's spring tension. PDQ's BB model uses 2 ball bearings and is rated ANSI/BHMA A156.1 Grade 2 (A5112) for standard-duty commercial doors.
What does an ANSI/BHMA grade mean for a hinge?
ANSI/BHMA A156.1 grades hinges 1 through 3 by load capacity and cycle testing, with Grade 1 the heaviest duty and Grade 3 the lightest. The BB hinge is Grade 2, one tier below PDQ's Grade 1 4-ball-bearing HB hinge and a step up from Grade 3 plain bearing hinges, matching most standard commercial door applications.
Is a 2 ball bearing hinge strong enough for a door with a closer?
Yes, for standard-weight commercial doors it is; the BB hinge is PDQ's Grade 2 standard-duty hinge specifically built to handle closer-equipped doors in offices, schools, and retail spaces. Reserve the 4 ball bearing HB hinge for heavier, wider, or higher-frequency doors where extra bearing capacity is worth the upgrade.
What gauge and material is the PDQ BB hinge made from?
The BB hinge uses 0.134" thick leaves in steel for interior, non-corrosive settings or stainless steel for exterior and corrosive environments. It ships in six finishes (600/P0, 605/US3, 613E, 619/US15, 630/32D, 652/US26D) and includes a non-removable pin with a 3/32" hex set screw.
Does the BB hinge meet fire door hardware requirements?
Yes, it complies with NFPA 80-2010, Section 6.4.3.1 for use on fire door assemblies. It also carries a five-year limited warranty and ships with 12-24 x 1/2" FHMS machine screws and 12 x 1-1/4" FHWS wood screws for installation.
