FAQs
How many electrified devices can I run through an EL8 hinge?
The EL8 carries 8 concealed 28-gauge wires through the hinge knuckle, giving enough conductors to power multiple electrified functions on one opening simultaneously, for example, an electrified lock plus a request-to-exit switch plus a door position switch, all through a single hinge.
When do I need an EL8 instead of an EL4?
Choose the EL8 when the door needs to power more than one electrified device at once, such as combining an electrified exit trim with REX and door-position monitoring. The EL4's 4 wires only support a single electrified function, so multi-function openings require the EL8's extra wire count.
Is the EL8 rated for fire doors?
Yes, the EL8 is UL Listed and conforms to NFPA 80-2010 Section 6.4.3.1 for fire door hardware, plus ANSI/BHMA A156.1-2013, so it can carry multiple electrified circuits through a rated door assembly without a separate power transfer hinge or wire harness.
How many cycles is the EL8 tested for?
PDQ tests the EL8 to over 100,000 cycles (the same rating as the EL4), despite carrying double the wire count, which matters on busy commercial doors running several electrified functions off one hinge.
Can I get the EL8 with a plug-in connector for faster installation?
Yes, the EL8-ISMC variant includes a molex connector option, letting installers plug in leads for multiple devices (lock, REX, DPS) at the hinge rather than hand-terminating all 8 wires individually.
