FAQs
What's the difference between fail-safe and fail-secure on the MR199, and how do I switch it?
Fail-secure keeps the lock locked during a power outage (used on stairwells and exterior doors); fail-safe unlocks on power loss (used on fire egress paths). The MR199 is field-changeable between the two modes without swapping hardware, so the same lock body works whichever way local code requires for a given opening.
Does the MR199's motor-driven mechanism need a continuous-duty power supply?
No. The MR199 uses a SMARTSENSE motor-driven mechanism, not a continuous-duty solenoid, so it only pulls power during the brief locking/unlocking transition. Standby draw is just 3-12mA depending on input (12-24VAC/VDC), with a 1.0A in-rush spike only during actuation, far lower ongoing load than a holding-coil strike.
What power supply does PDQ recommend for the MR199?
PDQ specifies its PS220 power supply, 110-120VAC input stepped down to a filtered/regulated 24VDC, 2A output. That 2A capacity covers the MR199's 1.0A in-rush plus headroom for an add-on reader or REX circuit; sizing smaller can cause the lock to stall mid-cycle under in-rush load.
Can the MR199 report door status back to my access control panel?
Yes. The MR199 offers optional Request-to-Exit (REX) and Latch Bolt Monitor (LBM) switches that feed status back to an access control panel or lock monitoring system. These are add-on functions selected at time of order, not standard on every unit, so specify them if your panel needs REX or latch-position input.
Will the MR199 work on a fire-rated door if it fails safe?
Yes, within listed limits, the MR199 is UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 listed for 3-hour fire door assemblies on single doors up to 4'0" x 8'0" and active leaves in pairs up to 96" x 96", in both fail-safe and fail-secure configurations. Confirm your specific door/frame combination is within these tested size limits before specifying fail-safe on a fire door.
