What is a flush bolt used for on a commercial door?
A flush bolt is mortised into the edge of the inactive leaf of a pair of doors and extends into the head and/or floor to hold that leaf stationary, so only the active leaf is used for daily traffic. PDQ offers manual versions (93170 hollow metal, 93270 composite wood) as well as automatic versions (93101-93103, 93201-93203 series) that retract without the user throwing a bolt by hand.
What's the difference between an automatic and a manual flush bolt?
A manual flush bolt requires the user to physically engage the bolt into the head and floor strikes, while PDQ's automatic series (93101/93201) retracts the top and bottom bolts on its own when the active door leaf is opened. Self-latching variants (93102/93202) go a step further and automatically re-engage once the inactive door closes.
Are PDQ flush bolts fire rated?
Yes, PDQ's flush bolt lines are UL/cUL listed for fire door applications, with ratings from 20 minutes (93203 composite wood fire bolt) up to 3.5 hours (93101/93102 hollow metal automatic and self-latching series). The specific rating depends on the door substrate and bolt series selected.
What does a door coordinator do?
A door coordinator mounts to the frame head of a pair of doors with an overlapping astragal and forces the inactive leaf to close first, so the astragal doesn't block the active leaf from closing and latching properly. PDQ offers both bar-style coordinators (COORD54/60/72/96) and gravity coordinators (93590/93591) that perform this sequencing function on UL-listed 3-hour fire-rated openings.
How do I size a PDQ door coordinator for my opening?
PDQ coordinators are selected by total pair-door opening width: COORD54 covers 48"-54", COORD60 covers 55"-60", COORD72 covers 61"-72", and COORD96 covers 73"-96". Each bar pairs with a filler bar sized to fill the remaining frame width, and a carry bar accessory is required for soffit-mounted installations.
When should I use a surface bolt instead of a flush bolt?
A surface bolt mounts to the face of the door rather than being mortised into the edge, making PDQ's 460/461/462 series a faster, lower-cost option for securing an inactive leaf where mortising isn't practical or the door can't be modified. The 462 series uses fully concealed mounting for added resistance to tampering in institutional settings.
