How PDQ Secured Odessa's New Fire Station #9
Contaminants in a fire station's truck bay pose serious risk of cancer to firefighters. In Odessa, TX, Fire Station #9 was built and secured with PDQ Hardware to be state-of-the-art. In accordance with new cancer initiatives, exhaust fans and associated systems are placed in the truck room while also including positive pressure areas to separate the fire station from truck room. PDQ's 7100 and 5500 Series closers, 6300 Series exit devices and trims, and hinges now keep every opening in the station self-closing, code-compliant, and sealed to support that pressure separation.
About the property
Fire Station #9 is one of Odessa Fire Rescue's newer stations, built in 2022 at 1900 87th Street. Designed to house up to ten personnel across four apparatus bays for a fire truck and ambulance, the station also includes a gym and a gear-decontamination room, and doubles as a satellite office for the Odessa Police Department.
The Challenge
The truck room's contamination controls, along with the whole fire station, called for openings that stay reliably closed and access-controlled. However, a fire station can't specify hardware that slows down egress in an emergency, and a shared public-safety facility carries code requirements on top of that. Every closer, exit device, and hinge had to close and seal automatically to hold the pressure-separation strategy together, while still opening fast and easily from the inside the moment a firefighter or needed out.
Fire Station 9 opened in 2022 with every truck-bay and station door closing and sealing on its own ,while also meeting exit code across a facility that does double duty as an Odessa Police Department satellite office.
