How PDQ Secured University Liggett School's New Boll Athletic Center
University Liggett School's enrollment was growing, and its existing athletic facilities weren't keeping pace. A 30,000+ square-foot expansion was designed to change that: a new multi-purpose gymnasium, fitness and instructional spaces, locker rooms, and a spacious lobby built to handle PE classes alongside a full slate of sports leagues and tournaments. PDQ's MR Mortise Locks, 6300 Series exit devices, and 7100 Series closers now secure every opening across the new Boll Athletic Center, including doors on card-swipe access control and automatic time-of-day locking schedules.
About the property
In 2017, with enrollment growing, Liggett needed a modern, functional athletic center to accommodate the new incoming students. but the project got off to a rocky start. The original architectural firm was forced to bow out after high budget overages, and Detroit-area firm Landry/Cekauskas was brought in late in the process to get the building back on budget and on schedule.
The Challenge
A project of this scale meant specifying hardware durable enough for heavy, daily student traffic across classrooms, corridors, and a new athletic wing, while still meeting necessary code requirements on rated openings and exterior doors. Zimmerman Architectural Studios and Catalyst Construction needed a coordinated hardware package that could stand up to that mix of academic and athletic use across an addition this size, sourced in a way that would keep the project on track.
The Solution
Landry/Cekauskas turned to hardware consultant Robb Rittner, owner of Rittner French Associates, who was given the floor plan, door types, security and access requirements, and hardware budget to spec the opening package. Rittner selected:
Sourcing the mortise locks, exit devices, and closers from a single manufacturer gave Rittner French Associates one coordinated product line to spec across the gymnasium, fitness spaces, locker rooms, and lobby. Liggett's Boll Athletic Center was dedicated in September 2018 and has been successfully fulfilling its purpose ever since.
