How PDQ Hardware Secured Macomb's New Joseph E. Koss Public Safety Building

Joseph E. Koss Public Safety Building opened in September 2021. It houses Macomb Fire Station #1 and Sheriff's Substation #7 across five drive-through apparatus bays, a 14-car sheriff's garage, training and fitness areas, dual administrative wings, and on-duty sleeping quarters, sized to accommodate 25 firefighters and up to 60 law enforcement officers. PDQ's MR Series Grade 1 mortise locks, 6300 Series Grade 1 exit devices and trims, mullions, hinges, and push plates secure every opening in the building: hardware built to help serve the community for the next 50 years.

      About the property

The Joseph E. Koss Public Safety Building is one of the newest, most modern public safety facilities in Macomb County. It houses both Macomb Fire Station #1 and Sheriff's Substation #7, and also serves as the township's Emergency Operation Center during large-scale emergencies.

      The Challenge

Macomb Township needed one building to do the job of several: house two independent public safety agencies with different operational needs, serve as an emergency command center during large-scale incidents, and remain fully functional for the next 50+ years. That meant specifying hardware across an vastly wide mix of space types under one roof including five drive-through fire apparatus bays, a 14-car sheriff's garage, training and fitness areas, separate administrative wings for each department, and living and sleeping quarters for on-duty firefighters. Furthermore, it had to be durable enough that none of it becomes the building's weak point over daily, multi-agency use.

      The Solution

The facility was outfitted with a coordinated PDQ hardware package built for that kind of scale and longevity:

      Mortise Lock · Grade 1

      MR Series

Specified throughout the building for long-term, heavy-duty security across both agencies' spaces.

      6300 Series

Installed on exterior doors and fire-rated interior openings, providing code-compliant egress at the addition's highest-traffic points

      9300 Series

      7100 Series

Specified for common-area, high-traffic areas, where higher cycle counts and rougher day-to-day use call for PDQ's extra heavy duty closer line.
