A 177-unit luxury apartment community in a resurgent historic neighborhood needed a way to stop departing tenants from walking off with a working key. PDQ's CL Series interconnected lock with removable SFIC cores now secures every unit entry door at The West, letting staff swap a core in minutes instead of calling a locksmith to re-key the whole building.
About the property
Traditional design, modern conveniences, and unparalleled amenities are at the heart of The West. Located in a resurgent historic West Allis neighborhood, The West is one of many luxury apartment communities the Mandel Group has developed across Metropolitan Milwaukee and the greater Midwest.
Built in 2019, the property is outfitted with a full collection of PDQ door hardware across its 177 units.
The Challenge
Sam Sousek, Senior Multi-Site Community Manager at The West, had run into the same problem again and again: tenants moving out and taking their apartment key with them. As Sousek put it, that practice creates a real safety and security problem, since a former tenant could return later and still get into the building and the unit. The standard fix is a locksmith re-key: a cost and hassle multiplied across a 177-unit property every time a lease turns over.
The Solution
Mandel's development team specified PDQ's CL Series interconnected lock with a removable SFIC (small-format interchangeable core) on every apartment entry door. When a tenant moves out, staff simply swap the old key cylinder core for a new one. The property's full PDQ package includes:
Sam has been happy with the hardware itself, but just as much with the support behind it: "PDQ and Jeff Loss didn't just sell locks," Sousek said of PDQ's local rep at DA Loss Associates, "they sold the service to keep my locks and building running." When an issue came up, Loss was there to resolve it rather than letting it become an out-of-sight, out-of-mind problem.
